Doljanchi is a Korean tradition to celebrate a baby’s first birthday. In America, we have the First Birthday Cake Smash photography, sort of a staged photo set to celebrate the baby’s first birthday. In Chinese culture, we have the Red Egg and Ginger party for the baby’s one month birthday, as well as the 100 Days birthday celebration that’s also commonly celebrated among other Asian cultures. No matter if it is 1 month, 100 days, or 1 year old, the parents of a newborn will certainly feel proud to have survived and want to celebrate with friends and family.
For Aleah’s Dol first birthday party, we rescheduled once due to the pandemic, but had come back together a month later, with everyone tested negative before being allowed to attend the party. We are grateful the parents were extra cautious to protect their guests and vendors, which had created a safe space and peace of mind for us all. The minute we stepped into the venue, we could tell the parents had taken the extra time and energy to prepare a party that was filled with lots of fun activities and special catering. There’s something for everyone to play and have a great time! Through our cameras, we could certainly tell the little ones were excited with the cotton candy cart by The Jolly Sheep, the adults were thrilled there’s a Kogi truck, and the bounce house, the hockey table, and many other entertainment facilities the venue, The Bay Club, had to offer.
Doljabi The Doljabi is a fortune telling game where the parents lay out several symbolic items such as books, money and threads.
One of the highlights at the Doljanchi is the Doljabi. “The Doljabi is a fortune telling game where the parents lay out several symbolic items such as books, money and threads. Whichever item the baby picks first predicts what type of person the baby will be when they grow up!” – Best of Korea. Can you guess what Aleah picked? Take a look at the pictures to find out!
Wow. What a thoughtful way to celebrate, it was such an honor, thank you for having us, Aleah….’s parents!
