They Lived Six Minutes Apart

J and T were both born in Compton.

They found out a couple of months ago that when they were children, their families lived six minutes apart. Same private school, different years. When his family moved to Carson, hers moved nearby. When his family moved again to Chino Hills, hers went to La Verne — still close, still parallel, still not quite intersecting.

They graduated the same year of high school without ever really knowing each other.

Then he joined the Air Force at 19 and left California. And for the next 30 years, J lived in Japan, Korea, Turkey, Guam, and eventually Maryland — a full life on the other side of the world from a woman he had met once, felt something inexplicable toward, and never forgotten.

The Sister in the Chair

T became a licensed cosmetologist at 17. She went into business for herself while she was still finishing high school, and one of her first clients was J’ sister. She’s been doing his sister’s hair for 38 years to date.

That’s the thread that kept them loosely connected across all those decades — not romantically, not intentionally, just present in each other’s peripheral lives through one person who sat between them. J’s sister would mention T’s milestones. T knew, in general terms, where J was and what he was doing. They were like two people reading the same story from different chapters, never quite in the same room.

Then last October, J’ sister came to Maryland for his twins’ family day at Hampton University. She came back a second time for homecoming. She had such a good time that when she returned to California, she was still talking about it — the food J had made, the meals he’d prepared with everything plated just right. She showed T the pictures in the chair.

When’s the next time you’re going out there? T asked.

Thanksgiving.

I want to come.

His sister texted him right then, while T was still standing over her in the chair. When I come out for Thanksgiving, T wants to come. J texted back: Absolutely. But tell her if she comes out here, she might get abducted. She ain’t leaving.

What he didn’t know was that T was reading the message over his sister’s shoulder.

He told his sister to give T his number and tell her to text him that night. She did. They talked every single day after that — calls, FaceTime, every day — until he quietly flew back to California in November, before Thanksgiving, before his sister even knew, to see T in person for the first time in 30 years.

When she walked up on me, he told me, it was just like it was that first time. And it was just like it was when I was 25.

J’s favorite movie is The Notebook. T’s too, something neither of them knew about the other until after they’d already fallen in love.

If you are following along, yes, he told me all of this story on our first call. It is part of the story a photographer he hires should know, he already knew what it takes to create meaningful photographs. In the movie, the husband reads his wife her own memories back to her — their love story, told as if it were someone else’s, because her mind had taken it from her. He reads it to her every day.

There are 30 years in the middle that are missing, J said. So I’m focused on capturing all the ones moving forward.

That’s not a client brief. That’s a philosophy. And it’s why, when he found Stephanie Ip Photography, he wasn’t looking for a vendor. He was looking for someone who understood what it meant to document something, someone, a story that mattered to make photographs that could someday be read back like a story.
