When families ask me where they should take photos in Los Angeles, Kenneth Hahn Park is always high on my list in Los Angeles area. With its sweeping greenery, a lake, boulders, and hidden nooks, it’s the perfect spot to capture both classic portraits and candid moments. Recently, I had the joy of photographing the Saccio family here, and their session beautifully shows why this park is such a favorite for family photos.

A Morning at Kenneth Hahn Park

After determining the best time for the two little kids we’ll be working with, we identified mid-morning will work best for the family. Mid-morning hours aren’t always the most pleasing to work with, but it is a different story at this part of the park where there are tall trees with ample shades. Like many popular LA photo locations, the park was busy with other families and even a bridal party at the same time we were there on a weekend. With a little creativity, we found angles that kept the focus on the Saccio family. Their coordinated beige and white outfits paired beautifully with the natural green tones of the park.

Photographing with Young Kids

With two little boys, ages two and four, the energy of the session was playful and unpredictable in the best way. We started with some classic posed portraits near the boulders before letting the kids run, giggle, and explore. One of my favorite moments was the second half of the shoot, where they chased after the wild ducks and geese by the lake, completely lost in the joy of play. These natural, unposed interactions often become the family’s most cherished photos.

Balancing Structure and Fun

Family photography, especially with little ones, is always a mix of structure and spontaneity. While we guided the family into a few timeless group shots, the heart of the session came when the kids were allowed to simply be themselves. By following their lead, we captured expressions and connections that can’t be staged, their smiles, curiosity, and even a few tears are all part of real family moments.

Why Kenneth Hahn Park is Perfect for Family Photos

Kenneth Hahn Park offers so much variety in a single location: open grassy fields, shaded paths, bridges, and views that make it feel worlds away from the city. It’s spacious enough for kids to run around safely while giving families a mix of natural backdrops. For anyone looking for a Los Angeles family photographer who knows the best local spots, this park is an ideal setting.

Family sessions don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. The Saccio family’s session at Kenneth Hahn Park was full of laughter, play, and the kind of candid energy that makes their gallery truly timeless.
