If you’ve ever dreamed of proposing in the Winter mountains surrounded by crisp air, pine trees, and sparkling lake views — Big Bear, California might just be your perfect backdrop. In this post, we’re taking you behind the scenes of how we scouted and planned a surprise proposal for Joshua, who wanted to pop the question in this iconic alpine getaway.

Why Big Bear Is Perfect for a Mountain Proposal

Big Bear offers that rare blend of cozy cabin charm and breathtaking outdoor scenery — all within a few hours’ drive from Los Angeles. Between the snow-dusted winters, golden autumn trails, and warm summer sunsets over the lake, there’s no shortage of romantic backdrops for couples who love nature.

When planning a surprise proposal here, we always look for three things:

  1. Light direction and time of day — Big Bear sunsets are stunning, but the mountains can block light earlier than you’d expect.
  2. Privacy and accessibility — many popular spots get crowded by mid-afternoon.
  3. Scenic variety — open views of the lake, tall pines, or rocky ledges for adventure-loving couples.

Scouting the Perfect Spot

During our location scouting trip, we explored three main areas to find the right combination of privacy, light, and natural beauty.

1. Juniper Point Picnic Area (Final Location Chosen)

Nestled along the north shore of Big Bear Lake, Juniper Point quickly became our top choice. Around 3:30 PM, the light wraps beautifully around the pine trees with a warm, even glow — perfect for a late afternoon proposal that transitions into golden hour portraits.

There’s a rustic boardwalk that opens to lake views and a mix of tall pines, making it both scenic and private. From a photographer’s perspective, the tree trunk textures and soft directional light help create depth while keeping the focus on the couple.

📍 Best Time: 3:00–4:15 PM (before the sun dips behind the mountains)
🚗 Accessibility: Easy walk from parking lot; ideal for surprise setups.
🐾 Bonus: Dog-friendly trails nearby — perfect for couples bringing their pets.

2. Castle Rock Lookout Point

Known for its dramatic rock formations and panoramic views, Castle Rock is ideal for adventurous couples who don’t mind a moderate hike. The path is steep in some areas, but the reward at the top is incredible — views of the entire lake basin under the changing mountain light.

Because the terrain is rocky and elevated, we tested visibility and safe footing. Ultimately, it’s better suited for elopement-style photo sessions or couples who want to make a day hike out of their proposal.

📍 Best Time: Morning to early afternoon (avoid sunset crowds)
⚠️ Consideration: Limited parking, uneven terrain, and exposure to wind.

3. Meadows Edge Picnic Area

This quiet, open field near the lake provides softer, more even lighting and a bit more seclusion. It’s great for couples who want a laid-back, natural environment surrounded by trees and tall grass.

We noted the ground can get muddy during colder months, so waterproof shoes are a must. The openness of this area gives flexibility for longer lenses and unobstructed backgrounds.

📍 Best Time: 3:00–4:00 PM for warm backlight
🌤️ Bonus: Works well for pre-proposal photos or dog-friendly walks.

Lighting & Timing Notes

One thing to know about mountain light: it disappears earlier than you think. During our scouting on December 7th, sunset was officially around 4:45 PM, but the sun dipped behind the ridgelines closer to 4:15 PM.

If you’re planning a proposal in Big Bear, aim to start 30–45 minutes earlier than you would at sea level. That way, you’ll still have enough natural light for portraits after the proposal moment.

Final Choice: Juniper Point Picnic Area

After exploring several locations, we chose Juniper Point Picnic Area for its balance of scenic light, accessibility, and atmosphere. It offered everything Joshua wanted — lake views, seclusion, and a sense of adventure without needing to hike in formal wear.

We loved how the light filtered through the trees, casting a soft golden tone on the couple. The area was quiet enough that they could share an intimate moment, yet open enough for me to capture wide, cinematic shots from a distance without being seen.

Tips for Couples Planning a Big Bear Proposal, Engagement or Elopement

  1. Book your stay early — Cabins and lodges fill up fast, especially on weekends and during peak season.
  2. Scout in advance or hire an experienced photographer who understands the light patterns and terrain.
  3. Dress for the season — layers, warm shoes, and hand warmers can make a big difference.
  4. Check road conditions during winter months; chains are often required.
  5. Bring your dog! Most trails around Big Bear Lake are pet-friendly (just keep pups leashed).

Bringing Shabu Along

As always, our dog Shabu joined us for the scouting adventure — testing trails, sniffing around, and proving once again she’s the best field assistant. Big Bear is one of our favorite places to bring her because so many cabins, trails, and lakeside areas are dog-friendly.

If you’re planning a proposal with your pup, Big Bear is the perfect place to make them part of your story.

Final Thoughts

Every proposal is unique, and choosing the right spot sets the tone for the entire experience. Whether you’re drawn to cozy cabins, open meadows, or dramatic cliffs, Big Bear offers endless backdrops for love stories that feel adventurous yet grounded.

If you’re considering proposing in the mountains, we’d love to help you find the perfect setting — one that fits your story, light, and vision.
