Before their wedding day at JW Marriott, Anaheim Resort, I had the joy of planning and photographing Rachel & Joseph’s surprise proposal at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, which was the moment our story together began, at the end of 2024. A proposal is its own kind of trust; they let me into something truly special to them. By the time their wedding day arrived, we weren’t meeting for the first time. The nerves had already softened, and our storytelling of their love continues.

A Wedding That Honored Two Worlds, Quietly (1pm)

Spot: Hotel Suite at the JW Marriott, Anaheim Resort

Rachel and Joseph brought two cultures into one celebration, and they did it with a lightness that felt entirely intentional. There was no pressure to check every cultural box. What remained were the things that genuinely mattered to them: family in the room, a ceremony conducted with care, and a reception that let people actually celebrate together.

I’ve photographed weddings where cultural tradition becomes performance. This wasn’t that at all. What I noticed instead was warmth among generations of family gathered not out of obligation, but out of genuine affection for this couple. That’s rarer than it sounds, and it photographs beautifully.

The Private Vow Exchange (3:30pm)

Spot: Hotel Suite at the JW Marriott, Anaheim Resort

Before the ceremony, before the garden and the formal portraits, Rachel and Joseph took a moment alone to share their most intimate moment, their personal vows. The ones written just for each other, where they read in the quiet of their suite.

I try not to direct moments like these. My job is to be present without being there, if you know what I mean. What happens in that space is the pause before someone speaks, the way a hand is held a little tighter, moments all documented as they unfold. Those are memories the both of them will come back to in 10, 20 years, and still feel it vividly as it was just yesterday.

The Ceremony (4:30pm)

Spot: JW Marriott’s Outdoor Garden

The ceremony took place at the outdoor garden, JW Marriott Anaheim. It is one of the more underused gems of this venue. There’s a naturalness to that space that surprises people who only know the hotel from its interiors. The light is open, the greenery provides depth, and it gives a ballroom wedding something it doesn’t always have: a moment outside, unhurried, before the evening begins.

For a couple as quietly intentional as Rachel and Joseph, it fits perfectly for them.

Reception (6pm)

Spot: The Arbor Ballroom

The Arbor Ballroom at the JW Marriott Anaheim is the kind of space that does the heavy lifting for you. The soaring ceilings, the handblown glass chandeliers, the scale of it — it sets a tone before a single guest arrives. The ballroom reveal, the grand entrance, speeches that made people laugh and then go quiet. First dances. A photobooth that brought out a side of the guests I hadn’t seen all day. A bouquet toss that the bridesmaids took very seriously.

Through it all, Rachel and Joseph moved through the room like people who were genuinely happy to be there. That calm is a gift to photograph. Some couples are so focused on the agenda that the day slips past them. These two seemed to actually feel it and embrace each and every moment calmly.

What It's Like to Photograph a Wedding at the JW Marriott Anaheim

For couples considering this venue, or photographers who haven’t worked here before, here are a few things worth knowing.

The suite light in the morning is exceptional: diffused, directional, and genuinely flattering. If you’re doing a private getting-ready or vow moment, the suite is worth using deliberately.

The outdoor garden reads softer and more intimate than you’d expect from a resort this size. It’s a real ceremony option, not an afterthought — especially for a couple who doesn’t want a purely indoor day.

The Arbor Ballroom is the flagship space, and it photographs like one. The chandeliers hold up in low reception light. The room has enough architectural detail that even wide shots feel composed.

For a Southern California wedding that balances intimacy with scale, and for an Orange County venue that doesn’t force you to choose between them, the JW Marriott Anaheim delivers all of them.
