When You've Been There from the Beginning
There is a particular kind of trust that only builds over time. It isn’t declared — it accumulates quietly, session by session, until one day you realize you’re not meeting a family, you’re continuing a conversation you started years ago. This was my sixth time photographing Judith and Rishi.
The first time was their maternity session — just the two of them, waiting for Oliver to arrive. Then their baby shower. Then his baptism. A multigenerational family session that brought grandparents and cousins into the frame. Holiday portraits in the studio, Oliver newly mobile and uninterested in holding still. And now this: Palos Verdes in the golden hour light, Oliver four years old and full of energy and curiosity, and a second baby on the way.
I’ve watched this family become itself. That’s not something I take lightly.
The South Bay bluffs have a quality in the late afternoon that I keep returning to, the light doesn’t perform, it simply arrives. It lay across Judith’s sparkling outfit softly, the way light does when it has no agenda. Rishi stayed close. Oliver, for his part, was exactly four: curious about everything, including the camera, which made the photographs more candid and authentic to the moment captured. There’s something right about that. The best family sessions don’t require anyone to pose, they just require everyone to be present, and then they take care of themselves.
What I find myself thinking about with returning families is how the photographs change meaning over time. The images from their first maternity session are now part of a larger story, one that includes a baptism, a holiday afternoon, a boy who learned to walk and talk between frames. This session will belong to that same archive. Someday Oliver will see all of it laid out together, and so will the child who hasn’t arrived yet.
That’s what I’m really making when I photograph a family more than once. Not just a collection of sessions — a record of becoming.
