Courthouse weddings in Los Angeles are intimate, simple, and full of heart. Whether you’re exchanging vows at the modern LAX Courthouse or beneath the timeless arches of Pasadena City Hall, this guide walks you through key items you need to know to plan a meaningful, relaxed, and beautifully documented civil ceremony.
As a Los Angeles Wedding Photographer who has captured both courthouse and elopement weddings, I love how these smaller celebrations let couples focus on what truly matters — the commitment, the joy, and the story that purely reflect that special day.
Why Choose a Courthouse Wedding in Los Angeles
Los Angeles offers several beautiful options for couples seeking a quick, no-stress, and affordable wedding. Courthouse weddings are:
- Simple and efficient: Ceremonies typically take 5–10 minutes, with minimal paperwork.
- Budget-friendly: Marriage license and ceremony fees are much lower than traditional weddings.
- Perfect for elopements or small families: Most courthouses allow a few guests or children to attend.
- Still incredibly meaningful: With thoughtful planning (and a great photographer!), these intimate moments can feel every bit as special as a big celebration.
Photographer Tip: Even a short ceremony can feel momentous — plan a small portrait session afterward to make the day feel complete.
How to Book Your Los Angeles Courthouse Wedding
The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/ County Clerk’s website has a lot the information mentioned in this guide, their information will always be the most updated, so be sure to visit their website for all the latest legal process. This guide will help you identify the key items you’ll need in order to streamline your overall process.
Here’s the general process:
- Apply for a Marriage License online – first step before booking your civic ceremony date and time.
- Book your Civic Ceremony date and time — availability can be scheduled up to 3 weeks in advance. Popular locations fill up fast.
- Bring valid photo IDs for both parties.
- Arrive 20–30 minutes early for check-in and security screening.
- Invite only a few guests — most courthouses allow 10 people or fewer.
- Celebrate afterward with a nearby meal, champagne toast, or beach photo session.
LAX Courthouse Wedding (West Los Angeles)
Located near the airport in Westchester, the LAX Courthouse is a calm and convenient choice for couples who want a straightforward, private ceremony without the downtown crowds.
What to Expect:
- Ceremonies are held in a small private room with a simple arch and floral decorations.
- The courthouse itself is modern and minimalist — not ornate like Pasadena or Beverly Hills, but bright and neutral in tone.
- Photography: You’re allowed to take photos inside the ceremony room but not elsewhere inside the building.
- Lighting Tip: The outdoor areas have partial shade and a soft green wall that works beautifully for portraits.
Nearby Photo Spots:
- Dockweiler State Beach (10 minutes away) – wide shoreline and palm-lined paths.
- Playa del Rey Bluff Trail – natural greenery with ocean views.
- Geoffrey’s Malibu – perfect for a post-ceremony lunch and beach photos if you want to make a day of it.
Photographer Note: From our experience photographing a weekday wedding here, the LAX Courthouse offers an intimate and peaceful environment that keeps the focus entirely on the couple — proof that simplicity can still feel deeply special.
Pasadena City Hall (San Gabriel Valley)
If you’re drawn to romance and architecture, Pasadena City Hall is a dream location for portraits and elopements.
What to Expect:
- Pasadena City Hall does not perform civil ceremonies, but you can obtain an event permit from the City of Pasadena and organize one on your own and hire your own officiant (who must be legally authorized) and at least one witness (per California law) sign the license. We have worked with a few awesome officiants for our elopement couples, let us know if you are in search of one.
- If your wedding is very small (just the couple + a few guests + a photographer), you may be able to use the City Hall grounds informally without a full event permit. Some couples have done brief ceremonies in the courtyard without reserving the full space.
- If you plan a more formal ceremony with seating, decor, many guests, vendors, or music, then you’ll need to reserve the space and obtain a permit/application. For example, the “Courtyard/Rotunda Areas Permit” from the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Dept. You can also check the events calendar here to see if your desired date is at all available.
- Fees: For reserved ceremonies/events at City Hall, fees may range from ~$500 to $5,500 depending on size, location, time, and whether you’re reserving accessories.
- Professional photos here require a permit from the City of Pasadena Film Office.
Why Couples Love It:
- The grand staircase, courtyard fountain, and arched corridors feel cinematic and timeless.
- The Mediterranean architecture photographs beautifully in morning or golden-hour light.
- Even if you’re not having your ceremony there, it’s one of the most photogenic backdrops in Los Angeles for wedding portraits.
Photographer Tip:
- Early morning offers softer light and fewer crowds, while evenings glow with warm tones. For better lighting, aim for morning or 2-hours before sunset for softer light. The City Hall architecture has surrounding structures that may cast shade earlier than open space.
- Weekday and weekend mornings often mean fewer crowds and easier photo conditions; weekends afternoons are often filled with crowds and photoshoots.
- We recently photographed a quinceañera session here, and the light and composition opportunities are identical to a wedding session — soft arches, cascading steps, and that stunning dome skyline that makes every image feel like a storybook moment.
Beverly Hills Courthouse (West LA)
Beverly Hills Courthouse is another favorite among local couples for its clean white marble interior and sophisticated vibe.
Highlights:
- Elegant, modern architecture — light, bright, and refined.
- Convenient parking and nearby photo spots like Beverly Gardens Park, Rodeo Drive, and The Beverly Hills Hotel.
- Slightly more flexible with photography permissions compared to LAX Courthouse.
Photographer Tip: The white façade acts as a natural reflector, giving portraits that airy, editorial look perfect for classic bridal outfits.
Tips for a Seamless Courthouse Wedding Experience
- Book your ceremony early. Time slots at popular courthouses fill quickly.
- Dress intentionally. Simple dresses, jumpsuits, or suits photograph beautifully.
- Bring a bouquet or boutonniere. It adds emotion and a pop of color.
- Plan a mini portrait session. Even 30 minutes nearby turns a quick ceremony into a full story.
- Make a celebration of it. A champagne toast, lunch reservation, or beach walk keeps the joy going.
Your day deserves to be remembered beautifully.
