A Quiet Coastal Proposal at Lunada Bay | Janelle & Leo’s Palos Verdes Engagement

There’s something quietly breathtaking about proposing along the cliffs of Palos Verdes—the sound of the waves, the salt in the air, and the feeling that time pauses just long enough for two people to say “yes.”

For Leo and Janelle, that moment unfolded at Lunada Bay, a tucked-away ocean overlook they love for its peace and simplicity. No elaborate setup, no crowd—just a wide-open view of the Pacific and the joy of a long-awaited promise.

The Setting

When it came time to propose, Leo wanted something authentic to them—simple, meaningful, and private. He had already met her parents to ask for their blessing (her father even teared up!), so the moment at Lunada Bay was the natural next chapter.

Behind the Scene

I arrived early with my dog, Shabu, to blend in while scouting—our little undercover tradition for surprise proposals. As the couple approached the bluff, Leo took a deep breath and knelt beneath the iconic tree overlooking the cliffs. The look on Janelle’s face said it all.

After the big “yes,” we spent the evening chasing light between Lunada Bay and Roessler Point, capturing easy laughter, soft forehead kisses, and playful prompts like twirls, “run and catch me” moments, and relaxed cliffside portraits.

Shabu instantly adored them—curling up next to Janelle during seated poses and sneaking into a few frames like she knew she was part of the story.

Tips for Planning a Palos Verdes Proposal

Every location has its quirks, and Palos Verdes is no exception. Here’s what I always share with couples planning their proposal here:

  • Choose a weekday. You’ll have privacy, easy parking, and fewer onlookers.
  • Scout in advance. Lunada Bay’s cliff edges are steep; know where it’s safe to stand.
  • Mind the light. The cliffs catch sunset quickly—start 60–90 minutes before the sun dips.
  • Check permit rules. Light stands or modifiers may require a city permit.
  • Dress for terrain. The trail down to Roessler Point is rocky—bring stable shoes and a change of clothes if you plan to explore.

Why Simplicity Works

Some of the most memorable proposals are the ones without extras. Leo and Janelle’s story reminded me that love doesn’t need to be loud to be extraordinary. When you remove the distractions—the setups, the décor, the pressure—what remains is connection, laughter, and truth.

As the sun set over the ocean, the sky glowed gold and lilac, wrapping them in that kind of light you can’t stage.
