From single to dating, to engaged, Joe has been a long time high school friend of Bryan (my assistant hubby who second shoot, reflect light and photograph and film behind the scenes)

When we were asked by Rachel and Joe to photograph their Engagement during their visit in Los Angeles, we were elated and couldn’t wait to plan the shoot with them!

The two met from the UCLA Kendo Club. Can you guess where they would like to create their memories at? You are right if you have guessed UCLA! As we were talking and discussing potential locations to photograph their Engagement session, UCLA was among the top few the couple had in mind, few other places were

  • Getty Villa
  • Albalone Cove beach
  • South Coast Botanic Garden
  • LACMA lampposts
  • Pasadena City Hall

To be honest, the UCLA campus is just the perfect place. It makes sense for the couple, and the school welcomes photoshoots on campus without the need of a permit, besides, did you know a lot of Hollywood movies were shot on campus? Here’s a movie list from IMDb. Certainly a lot of positives than negatives.

Rachel and Joe are super easy going couple, and they were really easy to work with as well. We haven’t quite shot that many Engagement session with close friends since we started the business, so this shoot was definitely special and fun for us, and we all got to see the different sides of ourselves working behind the camera and posing in front of the camera. How cool is that? I wouldn’t trade anything else for these kind of memories we got to create together, truly a special Engagement photoshoot in LA this year.

If you are reading this, and also have the same idea of photographing on the UCLA campus, just keep in mind of UCLA’s academic calendar, which you can find on the school website. You will also want to pay attention to local news and events that might be happening on or nearby the campus around the time of your desired session date.

Just a couple weeks before our shoot date, the Pro-Palestine protest broke out on the UCLA campus, and we were concerned we may have to switch location should the campus became unsafe. Luckily, the school had it under control and made our shoot there possible on the date we had set on our calendar. Furthermore, our shoot took place around Graduation, a ton of graduates were as well photographing at the same spots we had in mind, which we had to work around many other photographers and groups, for some of the spots we even forgo altogether to avoid competition and waiting around during the Golden Hour time.

Tips for an Engagement session

The key to a successful photoshoot and overall experience is to book and plan ahead with your photographer. Give yourself at least 2 months of planning to create a shoot route with your photographer, especially for a location that has a lot of nice spots you want to photograph at. After you’ve picked the location, you’ll want to pick outfits that best matches with the scenery and vibes of your choice. For ladies, it will be a great time to book a trial for Hair & Makeup, with the potential HMU Artist you’d like to work with on your Wedding Day. Keep in mind on the turnaround time, allow yourself enough time to review the photos, ask for any adjustments, and finally sending to print for the Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates cards, and don’t forget the mail transit time to your invitees. When picking out vendors, work backwards from your Wedding Date is what we always suggest to our engaged couples.

Our turnaround time for full gallery on Engagement sessions is at least 2 weeks, but no longer than 4 weeks.

Our Traditional Wedding packages come with a minimum 1 hour Engagement session, and you can certainly book just the Engagement session first before deciding whether you’d like us to photograph your Wedding Day as well.
