Terranea Beach • Los Angeles • California
Terranea Resort sits on a 102 oceanfront acres land on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, about 20 miles from LAX, with 9 outdoor ceremony sites and with Catalina on the horizon on a clear day. It is the closest feeling of a destination wedding without the need to get on a plane.
We are a preferred vendor here, and we’ve photographed proposals, weddings and portraits across the property. Having worked on the property from morning and evening hours, we understand the perfect sunlight for portraits, and the direction the sun sets on the property.
Tell us your date and which site you’re considering, and we can provide you a hint on where the best light hits there at that hour.
It opened in June 2009, a $480 million build on the site of Marineland of the Pacific — the oceanarium that drew crowds to these same bluffs from 1954 to 1987. Worth knowing because it explains the layout: the property was designed around views that already existed.
The Mediterranean architecture does a lot of quiet work in photographs. Warm stone against blue water is a more forgiving combination than it looks, and it holds up in flat light as well as golden hour.
Nine outdoor venues, roughly 75,000 square feet of outdoor event space, 60,000 indoors. Practically that means several weddings can run at once on different parts of the property without ever meeting.

Terranea isn’t the obvious choice for an elopement. It’s a resort, and resorts suggest guest lists. But it turns out to be one of the easiest places in Southern California to marry with almost nobody there — and the resort itself lists several of its sites as suitable for elopements, Ocean Lawn among them.
Minimal arrangements. No permit, no hiking in, no setup to carry. Catalina Point already has a pergola and a manicured lawn. You arrive and check into your stay the night before, walk out to the lawn to say your vows, and head on over to one of the many fine restaurants on the property within steps. For couples who want the coastal vibe and energy without the heavy logistics, this is it.
The scale works in your favor. A pergola gives you a defined space, which means two people don’t look lost the way they would on an open lawn. It’s the one site on the property that photographs just as well with four people as with two hundred.
You can stay. Lodging on site, dinner at one of the restaurants, breakfast the next morning with the ocean still there. An elopement that doesn’t end with a drive home is a different kind of day.
And it’s twenty minutes from the South Bay. If family are local but you don’t want a wedding, this is the version where a few of them can come for an hour and then you get your evening back.
Both are coastal. The difference is the effort.
Catalina means a ferry, permits, weather windows, and flowers that travel with you. You get genuine wilderness and near-total privacy, and the day feels like a trip.
Terranea means a twenty-minute drive and someone else handling the details. You get the same Pacific and none of the logistics, but you’re on a resort rather than a ridge.
Neither is better. Couples who want the adventure pick the island; couples who want the ease pick the peninsula.

The property faces west, which is the whole reason it photographs the way it does. The ceremony sites take direct sun late in the day, so a 4pm ceremony in June and a 4pm ceremony in November are two completely different jobs.
Wind is the real variable. The bluff sites catch it most afternoons — beautiful with the right fabric, difficult for anything structural.
It is also worth to know that Palos Verdes itself has its own micro climate, it is especially apparent at Terranea — where you will see clear sky and bright sun in the neighboring cities, while onsite it can be overcast with low visibility of the horizon line. Regardless of how the sky looks, the property will always deliver picturesque views and atmosphere to celebrate your special day.
Terranea uses in-house catering for most events, but outside catering is permitted with prior approval for specific cultural and religious requirements — which makes it genuinely workable for South Asian, Persian, kosher and other culturally specific food programs.
Catalina Point for the classic oceanfront frame with the pergola. Ocean Lawn for something more intimate with the peninsula behind you. The Meadows if you have a large guest count or want shelter from the afternoon wind.
Yes. Several sites suit small ceremonies, and Catalina Point works well for very small counts — the pergola gives you a defined space without needing to fill a lawn.
About twenty miles, roughly thirty from downtown Los Angeles. Close enough that out-of-town guests can fly in the same day.
With prior approval, for cultural and religious requirements. Contact the events team early — this is not a same-week decision.
Yes — it’s private property, and photography is arranged through the resort as part of your event.
