There is something particular about a couple who chooses to return to where they began.

Michael reached out knowing exactly where the proposal needed to happen: Tongva Park in Santa Monica — the park where he and Mary walked on their very first date. They had met online. Both were in the middle of demanding medical residencies. They had found in each other a kind of stillness that the rest of their lives didn’t offer. When the ring was finally ready, Michael wanted to bring her back to the place where everything started. He wanted the circle to close there.

As a Santa Monica surprise proposal photographer, I’ve stood in many parks. But Tongva Park has a particular quality — the gentle terracing, the way the light softens across the lawn in the late afternoon, the quiet hum of the city held just far enough at bay. The weather had different plans for us, and it was a go-green rain or shin guided by Michael, as that particular day marks a significance to their relationship. He prioritized date over weather, a meaningful decision that only belongs to them. Michael guided Mary toward the spot we’d chosen. I had positioned myself ahead of time, close enough to catch what was coming, far enough that Mary never saw me.

When Michael got down on one knee, her reaction was everything genuine surprise looks like — not the hand over the mouth she might have practiced in her head, but something unguarded and completely herself.

We spent some time after the proposal just walking. There was no rush. The adrenaline softens into something quieter, and that’s where some of the most honest portraits live — the moments when they stop performing the engagement and simply start being in it.

Mary and Michael both work in psychiatry. They understand, professionally, how people carry their histories. I think that’s part of why the location mattered so much to Michael — he knew that returning to where they began would mean something to her in a way that a new, picturesque backdrop never could.

I went home that evening thinking about what it means to photograph a first yes. And then, sometime later, a second yes at the same park — because a year after this proposal, we came back to Tongva Park together for their engagement session. And the following May, photographed their wedding day at Westlake Village Inn.

This is why we do this work.
