Calamigos Ranch is known for its sprawling greenery, rustic charm, and the kind of variety photographers dream about. But for Matt and Lauren, this engagement session was extra special – they just got engaged the morning before!

Normally, late-morning summer shoots here are a balancing act with bright, harsh sunlight. This day, the cloud cover acted like nature’s perfect diffuser, keeping the light gentle and the air cool. It was the kind of weather that made everyone relax a little more, linger in the open spaces, and truly enjoy the scenery without worrying about squinting into the sun.

The Oak Room – A Hidden Gem for Romantic Backdrops

We started at the Oak Room, a location that immediately reminded me of the temporary-closed Wayfarers Chapel in Palos Verdes. Its warm wooden beams and tall glass windows created an architectural elegance that felt timeless. The green lawn outside. likely turf but just as photogenic, gave us a lush, vibrant setting that contrasted beautifully with the building’s rich textures.

For couples who aren’t drawn to the beach but still want something open, airy, and romantic, the Oak Room is a perfect choice.

Warming Up to the Camera

Mentioned earlier, Matt and Lauren just got engaged the morning before, this photoshoot was scheduled as a second surprise to Lauren. Given no prior notice and photoshoot experience, the couple needed some extra time to warm up to the lens. We kept the early moments relaxed, giving them space to settle in while offering gentle direction.
